Several secondary schools in Butaleja District have joined the celebrations following the release of the Uganda National Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) results on Friday, March 13.
Schools visited on Monday—including Busolwe Students Centre, Busolwe Secondary School, Busabi Secondary School, Bugalo College Bwirya and Busaba Seed Secondary School—reported improved performance, with administrators attributing the success to hard work by learners, cooperation with parents and committed teaching staff.
At Busolwe Secondary School, Director of Studies Denis Muhumya said that 41 out of the 55 candidates who sat for the Advanced Level examinations obtained at least two principal passes, mainly in Arts subjects. He added that the school’s best candidate scored 16 points.
At Bugalo College Bwirya, Director of Studies Tolbert Kiiza reported significant improvement in performance. The school registered 30 candidates, with only two failing to obtain the required two principal passes.
The best-performing student scored 13 points. Kiiza advised successful candidates to pursue university education while encouraging those who did not meet the requirement to consider technical courses in institutes, noting that some may struggle with the demands of the evolving curriculum.
Meanwhile, Nickson Ouma, the headteacher of Busabi Secondary School, said the school ranked second in the district. He reported that all 11 candidates who sat for the examinations achieved at least two principal passes, with the best student scoring 11 points in science subjects.
Ouma attributed the performance to discipline among learners and strong cooperation from teachers. However, he emphasized the need for additional science teachers and improved laboratory equipment to enhance performance in science subjects.
At Busaba Seed Secondary School, headteacher Zebron Wangolo Wangowa said the school’s top candidate, Salim Mugoya, scored 10 points in science. He was followed by Derrick Hamba, a visually impaired student, who scored seven points with two principal passes.
At Busolwe Students Centre, the best-performing candidate scored 15 points, and all the 29 candidates reportedly obtained at least two principal passes, although mainly in Arts subjects.
Despite the achievements, school administrators noted that performance in science subjects remains a challenge across many schools in Butaleja District. They called on the government to increase support, particularly in providing science apparatus and improving laboratory facilities.
Meanwhile, the headteacher of Busabi Secondary School, Nickson Ouma, also raised concerns over inadequate accommodation for learners following the destruction of a classroom block by a storm.
Ouma said he has repeatedly written to relevant authorities seeking assistance but has not yet received a response.
He added that the school’s student population has risen to about 1,000, forcing some learners to study under trees despite changing weather conditions, as the school awaits government intervention.
