The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among, has donated Shs20 million to support the Mothers’ Union SACCO in Bukedi Diocese, in a move aimed at strengthening families and promoting community development.
The pledge followed an appeal by Canon Dorothy Otim, President of the Mothers’ Union in Bukedi, who highlighted the financial and social challenges facing members.
In response, the Speaker reaffirmed her commitment to empowering women and supporting family-based initiatives.
Delivering her message through Hon. Juliana Modest Auma, a commissioner in the NRM Electoral Commission, Among urged parents to remain united in their marriages and serve as role models to their children for responsible citizenship.
The message was delivered to hundreds of Christians who gathered on Wednesday, March 25, at Mugulu Integrated Primary School playground to celebrate the Day of Mary.

Among expressed concern over rising family breakdowns, warning that separation among couples is weakening the moral fabric of society. She singled out social media platforms, particularly TikTok, as a growing distraction in many homes, noting that some couples are spending less time on family development.
During the event, Christians also commissioned a vehicle jointly purchased for the archdeaconry to enhance evangelism activities in the region.
Guest preacher Justice Sarah Langa revealed alarming trends in family stability, noting that approximately 1.2 million couples have divorced, with women bearing the greatest burden—accounting for 68.2 percent of those affected.
She added that polygamy has risen to 25 per cent, leaving many women silently struggling with stress.
Justice Langa urged women to remain resilient and respectful in their marriages, even in cases where they may be the primary earners.
Meanwhile, the Bishop of Bukedi Diocese, Rt. Rev. Samuel George Egessa called on couples to uphold the sanctity of holy matrimony.
He also enrolled 25 married women into the Mothers’ Union, awarding them certificates in recognition of their commitment to Christian family values.
The bishop further announced that next year’s Mary’s Day celebrations will be hosted at a different venue within the diocese as part of efforts to expand outreach and participation.
