Secondary schools across Bukedi Region have today reported to Busolwe Secondary School in Butaleja District ahead of the regional ball games set to run for 10 days.

While welcoming teams to the venue, the Regional Chairperson of the Bukedi Secondary Schools Sports Association, Dominic Maloba, said the competitions have begun with a thorough screening process to ensure fairness. He warned against the use of ineligible players, commonly referred to as “mercenaries.”

Maloba emphasized that only bona fide students with valid Learners Identification Numbers will be allowed to participate, noting that strict verification measures are in place. He added that security has been heightened to manage any cases of indiscipline among players and spectators.

However, he expressed concern over the limited time allocated for the games, saying it may not be sufficient for all activities. Maloba also criticized some teachers for allegedly fielding non-students and faulted parents who interfere in team selection.

The host headteacher of Busolwe Secondary School, Musa Kasajja Higenyi, who also serves as the Butaleja District Sports Chairperson, said the district is proud to host the regional tournament for the first time.

He revealed that about 70 schools are participating in the games, adding that co-curricular activities will temporarily interrupt normal learning in the district for at least a week.

Higenyi noted that due to the large number of participants, matches will also be held at nearby venues including Mugulu High School and Mugulu Integrated Primary School to ease congestion.

He called for discipline among all participants and spectators, warning that law enforcement officers will take action against individuals who violate rules.

The regional ball games, which have kicked off today, Monday, April 13, are expected to conclude on April 18. The national-level competitions will then be held in Mukono District for girls and Lira District for boys.
