Soroti Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Imran Muluga has intensified the fight against corruption after leading an operation that resulted in the arrest of a National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) official accused of extorting money from residents seeking national identity cards.

The suspect, Joshua Ekude, attached to the Soroti NIRA office, was arrested in a joint operation involving the RDC’s office, the District Internal Security Office (DISO), and police following numerous public complaints.

Muluga said his office received reports that some officials were demanding illegal payments from applicants despite government directives that national ID registration services are free of charge.

He explained that authorities first engaged NIRA officials and community representatives to address the complaints, but the alleged extortion reportedly persisted, prompting investigations and an intelligence-led operation.

“We warned the officers and sensitised the public on reporting extortionists, but some continued exploiting citizens,” Muluga said.

He warned that government officials who misuse public offices to exploit wananchi would face arrest and prosecution, emphasizing the need for transparency and fairness in public service delivery.

Ekude is currently detained at Katine Central Police Station as CID officers continue investigations.
