Uganda – Soroti City West Member of Parliament, National Vice Chairperson for Eastern Region on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Central Executive Committee, and businessman, David Calvin Echodu, has been successfully vetted and approved by Parliament’s Appointments Committee for appointment as State Minister for Foreign Affairs.
Echodu, appointed by President Yoweri Museveni, appeared before the committee chaired by Speaker Jacob Oboth-Oboth and sailed through the vetting process, effectively ending weeks of debate and public criticism regarding his previous United States citizenship status.
During the proceedings, members of the Appointments Committee confirmed that Echodu had fulfilled all legal requirements relating to the renunciation of his American citizenship, clearing the way for his confirmation.
The development marks a significant political victory for Echodu, who in recent months has faced sustained scrutiny from sections of the political class and social media commentators seeking to cast doubt on his suitability for the position based on concerns surrounding dual citizenship.
Speaking shortly after his confirmation, a visibly relieved Echodu expressed gratitude to God and members of the committee for the confidence they had placed in him.
“I thank God Almighty and the members of the vetting committee for trusting me. I will serve Uganda diligently and to the best of my ability,” he said.
His confirmation is expected to strengthen Uganda’s diplomatic team at a time when the country seeks to deepen international partnerships, attract investment, and advance its foreign policy priorities.
For his supporters, the approval is a testament to his resilience, leadership credentials, and commitment to public service.
A well-travelled and internationally connected businessman, Echodu brings extensive experience in international engagement and strategic partnerships to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
As State Minister for Foreign Affairs in charge of International Affairs, Echodu will be expected to play a key role in advancing Uganda’s interests on the global stage.
His responsibilities will include strengthening diplomatic relations, promoting economic and trade cooperation, supporting regional peace and security initiatives, representing Uganda in international forums, protecting the interests of Ugandan citizens abroad, engaging the diaspora community, and enhancing the country’s image internationally.
Political observers believe his business background, global networks, and understanding of international markets position him well to contribute to Uganda’s efforts to expand foreign investment, strengthen bilateral and multilateral partnerships, and support the country’s socio-economic transformation agenda.
The successful vetting and approval of David Calvin Echodu marks the beginning of a new chapter in his public service career and reinforces confidence in his ability to represent Uganda’s interests in an increasingly interconnected world
