Munyagwa Criticizes Government Over Fort Portal City Funding
The Common Man’s Party (CMP) presidential flag bearer, Mr. Munyagwa, has criticized the government for granting Fort Portal city status without providing adequate funding to support infrastructure development and urban beautification.
Speaking during a campaign tour in Fort Portal City, Munyagwa questioned the rationale behind the city’s elevation, arguing that the expected financial support has not followed. He said the government’s failure to fund the city undermines its ability to meet basic urban standards.
“Fort Portal was given city status, but the funding that should accompany it was never provided. You cannot call this a city when the government has failed to facilitate it to meet expected standards,” Munyagwa said.
He accused the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) of neglecting urban centers, noting that Fort Portal’s condition reflects challenges facing cities across the country.
Munyagwa began his campaign activities by visiting his former schools, St. Leo’s College Kyegobe and Nyakasura School, which he described as once among the best-performing institutions in the Tooro sub-region but now facing decline due to government neglect of public education.
“These schools produced leaders and professionals, but today they are deteriorating because the government has abandoned public education,” he said.
He later addressed residents in Kisenyi, central Fort Portal City, where he reiterated that city status should result in improved services, infrastructure, and livelihoods.
Munyagwa also urged residents of the Tooro sub-region to reconsider their support for the NRM, arguing that continued backing of the ruling party hinders political change. He further claimed that voting for the opposition would end what he described as politically motivated persecution, citing the prolonged trial of opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye.
The CMP presidential candidate later proceeded to Bunyangabu District, where he continued to engage supporters on his party’s governance and economic reform agenda as part of his wider campaign tour of the Tooro region.
