BUTALEJA — Dr. Adam Musiho, the Acting District Health Officer (DHO) for Butaleja District, on Tuesday evening, officially handed over the office to Dr. David Okanya, the newly appointed District Health Officer.
Dr. Musiho, who assumed the acting role in 2024, has been demoted and transferred to Busolwe General Hospital, where Dr. Okanya had been serving prior to his appointment.
During the handover ceremony, Dr. Musiho thanked the people of Butaleja for the cooperation accorded to him during his tenure and apologised for any shortcomings encountered during his leadership.
He highlighted key achievements registered under his term, including the completion of Mazimasa Health Centre and the construction of a ward at Budumba Health Centre IV.
In his remarks, Dr. Okanya called for forgiveness, unity, and teamwork among staff in the health department. He pledged to work closely with stakeholders and said he would continue to consult Dr. Musiho and other former DHOs for guidance aimed at improving health service delivery in the district.
The Butaleja Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Mr. Mike Yoga, said Dr. Okanya was the most suitable candidate for the position due to his seniority and experience. He noted that Dr. Okanya is a Principal Medical Officer, a key requirement for heading the district health department.
According to the CAO, Dr. Okanya has over 10 years of service and extensive experience, compared to Dr. Musiho, who is a recent graduate with less than three years’ leadership experience in the department.
He added that Dr. Musiho’s acting appointment had exceeded the stipulated six-month period.
Mr. Yoga further revealed that other doctors qualified for the DHO position include Dr. Ivan Mukasa and Dr. Innocent Musiime.
Dr. Musiho becomes the third person to serve as head of the district health department since the retirement of Dr. Siragi Kizito.
