The Bishop of Soroti Catholic Diocese, Rt. Rev. Dr. Joseph Eciru Oliach has appealed to the newly inaugurated leaders of Soroti City to exercise honest leadership, fight corruption, and focus on improving services for residents.

He delivered the message during a special Holy Mass held after the swearing-in ceremony of the city mayor, division mayors, and councillors.

Bishop Eciru reminded the leaders that public office is a responsibility to serve communities and not an opportunity for personal enrichment.

“You were elected to work for the people, therefore you must become servant leaders,” he said.

The bishop encouraged the officials to adopt the Rotary Club philosophy of “Service Above Self,” stressing that leadership should be guided by commitment to the public good rather than selfish interests.

He also applauded the leaders for beginning their term through prayer and seeking divine guidance, comparing them to the biblical King Solomon who asked God for wisdom to lead his people wisely.

“You have started well by seeking wisdom and understanding from God. A good beginning is important,” Bishop Eciru noted.

The cleric warned the leaders against corruption, abuse of office, selfishness, dishonesty, and political divisions, saying such behaviours undermine development and weaken public trust in leadership.

Referring to biblical teachings, he cautioned councillors against anger, jealousy, immoral conduct, and conflicts that could negatively affect council operations, recruitment processes, and the awarding of contracts.

He further challenged the new city leadership to tackle key problems affecting Soroti City, including poor waste management, insecurity, drug abuse, street children, corruption, and damaged roads.

“Let Soroti become a clean and organised city, free from corruption and other social problems,” he urged.

Bishop Eciru also called for discipline and professionalism during council meetings, warning leaders against engaging in fights, chaos, or disrespectful behaviour while conducting public business.

“There should be order and respect in council. Remain honourable leaders and avoid actions that embarrass the public,” he advised.

On leadership values, the bishop encouraged punctuality, transparency, and accountability, adding that maintaining a good reputation is more valuable than wealth.

“A good name is worth more than riches and material possessions,” he said.

He concluded by urging the leaders to become role models in society and work tirelessly for the benefit of the people who elected them.

“Serve your people wholeheartedly, avoid selfish interests, and always remember that true leadership is about sacrifice and commitment,” Bishop Eciru said.

The bishop later prayed for wisdom, unity, and guidance for the newly sworn-in leaders as they officially begin their duties in Soroti City.
