Tororo, — Police in Tororo District are investigating a suspected murder by poisoning after a two-year-old boy died under suspicious circumstances on Sunday evening.
The deceased has been identified as Oloka Michael, a resident of Machar West Zone, Mbula Parish, Petta Sub-county in Tororo District.
Police have arrested the child’s mother, Adikini Christine, 19, a housewife and bar attendant at Mulanda Trading Centre, in connection with the incident.
She is currently being detained at Tororo Central Police Station as investigations continue.
According to preliminary police reports, the child had been living with his grandmother, Nyafwono Victoria, while his mother worked in Mulanda Trading Centre.
Authorities allege that on May 31, Christine returned home and became involved in a disagreement with her mother over her movements.
Following the argument, she reportedly took the child and disappeared to an unknown location.
The following morning, the grandmother reportedly heard the child crying from one of the houses within the family homestead. Upon checking, she found him in a weak condition, with white foam believed to be associated with rat poison coming from his mouth.
The child was rushed to Nagongera Health Centre IV for medical attention but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Speaking on the incident, Moses Mugwe, the Bukedi South Regional Police spokesperson, condemned the alleged act, describing it as a violation of the fundamental right to life.
“We strongly condemn such acts. Investigations are ongoing, and further updates will be provided as inquiries progress,” Mugwe said.
The incident comes just hours after another tragic case in Tororo District, where a father allegedly killed his three-year-old daughter in Magola Sub-county, raising fresh concerns about child safety and domestic violence in the area.
Police say investigations into both incidents are ongoing
