The crime, which involved a calculated plan and violent execution, has left the local community in shock. Authorities have pieced together the story of how a group of suspects carefully plotted the killing, stalked their victim, and divided the stolen money, ultimately revealing the full extent of this tragic crime.

A Sinister Plot Unfolds

The crime was meticulously planned by a group of suspects who knew exactly what they were doing. Police investigations reveal that the criminals met in the Moru-Apesur area, where they devised the attack on Kakunda.

The planning was thorough: they knew her routine and were aware of her business, which involved carrying large sums of money to operate her mobile money.

According to the suspects report who name is not mentioned here says they positioned themselves strategically, starting by staking out Kakunda’s home and they followed her as she left her house that fateful morning, carrying her mobile money equipment a table, a bag, and an umbrella. What initially seemed like an ordinary day for Kakunda would soon turn into a nightmare.

As Kakunda made her way toward the main road, the criminals trailed her closely, following her movements with great precision.

The group watched her walk through the YY corridor and towards the main road leading to Moroto Road, where she intended to board a taxi. The suspects kept their distance, making sure not to alert her, but were constantly watching her every move.

The criminals then followed her, positioning themselves in a spot where they could observe her without being noticed. They patiently waited as Kakunda continued on her path, unaware of the danger looming ahead.

As Kakunda approached the taxi she was supposed to use, the suspects observed her closely. They were ready to act when they saw her board a taxi, which they had anticipated. At first, they believed their plan had failed—Kakunda had made it into the taxi, and they thought they had missed their chance.

Simon Epeu, one of the key suspects, entered the taxi where Kokunda had taken a seat. He forcibly pulled her out of the vehicle, dragging her onto the street. Kakunda, realizing she was under attack, desperately tried to hang onto her belongings.

She fought back, clutching her bag tightly, but it was clear that the situation was escalating into something far worse.

It was during this struggle that another suspect, Raymond, emerged with a firearm. Without hesitation, Raymond shot Kakunda in cold blood when he tried rushing her to Soroti Regional Hospital, where she died. The sound of the gunshot echoed through the street as witnesses watched in horror.

After Kokunda collapsed, the suspects seized her bag, which contained unknown amount of money an amount that had been carefully targeted by the criminals. Without wasting any time, they fled the scene, knowing the police would be quick to respond.

The suspects quickly escaped the area, running through the Campswahili route and branching off near the Gasco Petrol Station. They made their way and headed to Madera, an area known for its quiet, less-policed surroundings.

The criminals’ next stop was a swamp near Bar-laws Nursery and Primary School, a secluded spot where they could safely divide the stolen money.

Epeu, who had been assigned to stand as a guard during the money division, recounted the details to police during a reconstruction exercise.

Raymond and Emma, two of the suspects, divided the 13 million shillings, with each suspect receiving a share. Epeu, who was given the responsibility of overseeing the operation, later received his portion, amounting to 8 million shillings.

The remaining 5 million shillings was set aside for three other accomplices—Rashid, Emma, and Iso—who had been involved in planning the attack but were not present during the execution.

Epeu explained that while they divided the money, Raymond insisted on taking full control of the bag, fearing that the other suspects might run off with the cash.

According to Epeu, Raymond didn’t trust the others, referring to them as “boys from town” who could potentially disappear with the stolen fortune.

Following the gruesome murder, police immediately launched a thorough investigation into the crime. Through surveillance footage, witness testimonies, and the reconstruction exercise, law enforcement officials were able to piece together the series of events leading up to the murder.

The suspects, who initially attempted to cover their tracks, eventually confessed to their roles in the crime during questioning.

East Kyoga Regional Police Commander Ibrahim Saiga confirmed that the suspects had admitted to the crime, outlining their roles in both the planning and execution phases.

The police were able to trace their movements and establish a clear connection between the suspects and the murder of Kokunda.

Authorities have continued their investigation to ensure that all individuals involved in the planning and execution of the crime are held accountable.

While the suspects in custody have confessed to their involvement, police are working to track down additional individuals who may have played a role in orchestrating the attack.

Community Shock and Reflection

The shocking murder of Patricia Kokunda has sent waves of fear and disbelief through the Soroti community. As a respected mobile money operator, Kakunda was a familiar face in the area.

Her untimely death has left many in the community, mourning her loss and questioning the safety of those who provide vital services to the public.

As police continue their investigation, the tragic case serves as a grim reminder of the dangers of crime and the lengths some individuals will go to in pursuit of money.

The community of Soroti, along with authorities, is determined to bring all those involved to justice and ensure that such a horrific act never occurs again.
