Soroti University has taken a significant step toward fostering harmony and mutual understanding by hosting its first-ever Interfaith Prayer Breakfast, an event that brought together leaders and followers from Anglican, Catholic, and Muslim communities.

Held under the theme “Unity in Diversity,” the gathering underscored the institution’s commitment to promoting peaceful coexistence and shared values among people of different faiths.

The event attracted a wide range of participants, including university administrators, religious leaders, staff, and students, all united by a common goal: to strengthen bonds across religious lines and encourage dialogue rooted in respect and understanding. In a world where divisions often arise from differences in belief, the prayer breakfast served as a timely reminder of the power of unity and collective purpose.

Delivering a keynote message, Shaikh Obilan Abubakar, Regional Assistant to the Mufti and Imam of Soroti University, called on attendees to embody the principles of trustworthiness and accountability in their daily lives.

Speaking on the topic “Religious Tolerance: A Critical Antidote to Bigotry in Society,” he emphasized that true faith is reflected not only in worship but also in how individuals treat one another.

He urged participants to rise above prejudice and embrace diversity as a strength rather than a barrier. According to him, societies flourish when people respect each other’s beliefs and work collaboratively toward common goals.

His message resonated strongly with the audience, many of whom acknowledged the importance of cultivating tolerance in both academic and social spaces.

Adding a spiritual perspective from the Catholic community, Rev. Fr. Dr. Jerome Agelu, the University Chaplain, highlighted the deeper meaning behind the interfaith gathering.

He noted that the prayer breakfast was more than just an event—it was a platform for building bridges between communities that might otherwise remain divided.

Fr. Agelu encouraged believers to live out their faith through acts of unity, compassion, and service to others. He stressed that genuine spirituality is demonstrated through love and understanding, particularly toward those with differing beliefs.

His remarks reinforced the idea that interfaith engagement is essential in nurturing a more inclusive and empathetic society.

Representing the university’s top leadership, Dr. Gregory Okello conveyed appreciation for the initiative on behalf of the Deputy Vice Chancellor. He described the event as a vital step in strengthening unity and cooperation within the university. Dr. Okello reaffirmed Soroti University’s dedication to creating an environment where diversity is celebrated and every individual feels valued and respected.

He further emphasized that institutions of higher learning play a crucial role in shaping not only academic excellence but also moral and social responsibility. By hosting events such as the Interfaith Prayer Breakfast, the university is actively contributing to the development of well-rounded individuals who are equipped to promote peace and understanding in their communities.

The atmosphere throughout the event was one of reflection, dialogue, and shared hope. Prayers, discussions, and moments of fellowship allowed participants to connect on a personal level, breaking down barriers and fostering a sense of unity. Many attendees expressed optimism that the initiative would become a regular feature on the university calendar.

As Soroti University continues to grow, the success of its first Interfaith Prayer Breakfast stands as a powerful testament to the impact of intentional efforts toward inclusivity. By bringing together diverse voices under one roof, the institution has set a strong example of how unity can be achieved through dialogue, respect, and shared values.

Ultimately, the event served as a reminder that while beliefs may differ, the pursuit of peace, love, and understanding is a universal aspiration—one that binds communities together and paves the way for a more harmonious future.
